What is abhishek Patra?

The Abhishek Patra is one of the Hindu ritual items usually crafted in the shape of a pot or cuboid and is used in the ceremony of bathing the deities.

This ritual is known as Abhishek or Abhishekam.

The deities are honored by the devotees with a shower of liquids such as milk, yogurt, clarified butter, water, honey, and fruit juices.

What is the use of this patra?

The Patra is used in temples and homes where small deities are worshiped.

The number of deities that can be accommodated depends upon the size of the Abhishek Patra.

Shiva Abhishek benefits a devotee in that the process cleanses the devotee of all limitations, negativities, definitions.

Every Abhisheka takes the worshipper closer to the Self and realize his union with the Paramatma.

It is separation of the Atma from the Paramatma that is the cause of all sufferings.

Bhasma – Brings detachment from the material world in order to realise the true Self

Chandan – Signifies purifying oneself and filling oneself up with divine fragrance

Curd – Signifies the art to preserve and cherish the beautiful experiences of life

Sugar – Is known to remove enmity, it signifies ability to adapt with every situation

Ghee – helps attain moksha, reminds us that one’s biggest goal is to realize the Self/soul.

Turmeric – Helps in healing and signifies the protection or shield one needs to maintain to remain unaffected by negative thoughts.

Gingelly Oil – Known to bestow one with knowledge, it signifies the flexibility one needs to remain open to new experiences and knowledge.

Dhatura – signifies one’s capacity to absorb negativity thrown by the world

Bel Patra – Signifies the surrendering of the three Gunas- Sattva, Rajas and Tamas

 Care for Abhishek Patra after performing religious rituals?

After performing the ritual, it is advised to rinse the Abhishek Patra well with water and clean it using a soft cloth.

Avoid using harsh chemicals that may take away the luster of the vessel. Store it in a dry place away from sunlight to avoid tarnish.
